How
effective is chair massage at events?
According to
psychologist Tiffany Field,
director of the Touch Research Institute
at the University of Miami School of Medicine,
“Any one who needs to stay alert and focused should get a
"massage"
–quick!”
Dr.
Field, along with colleagues of Duke and Georgetown Universities, did a controlled
study.
One group of subjects received 10-15 minute chair massages and
another group only rested
for the same period of time. Subjects who received the
chair massages, EEG results showed
that they had a decrease in alpha and beta brain waves (indicating greater
alertness) and an
increase in delta waves, suggesting they were more relaxed.
They also worked math computations
faster and more accurately than the group who
only rested for the same period of time.
Results: The group who got
the short massages were more relaxed and focused.
