FAQ's about Workplace Massage:
What
is workplace massage?
Workplace massage is a short 10-15 minute massage given to
employees at the workplace. The massages generally covers such areas as the
head, neck, shoulder, back, arms, and hands, and can be adapted to special
needs. The massages are given by professional massage therapists while employees
sit in a specially designed chair built for comfort and support. They remain
fully clothed and no oils or lotions are used.
Why
massage in the workplace?
Today, stress is a "fact of life".
The workplace is no exception. Studies show employees commonly share the
feelings of being just a number or another piece of equipment to owners and
upper management. Deadlines, rapidly changing technology, and unavoidable
interpersonal conflicts are just a few of the stresses workers cope with on a
daily basis.
The effects of stress
is cumulative and can lead to Headaches,
backaches, eyestrain, neck pain.
Listlessness, poor concentration,
Anxiety,
depression, irritability, or anger.
Repetitive use injuries such as tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.
Lower resistance to colds and infections, high blood pressure, ulcers and heart
disease.
Physical and emotional exhaustion,
also known as "burn-out".
How
does workplace massage work?
Normally massages
take place in an empty office, conference or break room. Prior to massage day, a
sign up list should be started so employees wanting to receive massage can
sign-up. On massage day, each employee rotates to get a massage. When they are finished they inform the next person
on the list that it is their turn. This way employees can stay productive while someone else is getting a massage.

Won't employees be too relaxed to work after massage?
No,
just the opposite, Short massages refresh and rejuvenates. Controlled studies at Duke,
Georgetown and
Touch Research Institute
at the University of Miami School of
Medicine showed that workers who received short chair massages demonstrated
1) decreased frontal EEG alpha and beta waves and increased delta
activity consistent with enhanced alertness; 2) math problems were completed in
significantly less time with significantly fewer errors after the massage; and
3) anxiety, cortisol (stress hormone) and job stress levels were significantly
lower, while workers who only rested for the same
period of time did not. Studies show that short massages, lasting 15
minutes, or less, recharges and refreshes, while longer massages crosses
the threshold that causes the body
to go into a different state of relaxation.
How much does it cost?
Rates can range from $35 -$85.00 per hour. Average is a dollar per minute per employee.
Who pays for the massage, the company or the employees?
Most companies pay
for employees to receive massage, some share the cost with employees, while
others let employees foot the entire bill. Either way bringing massage therapy to the workplace is a
win-win for any company and it's employees.
